Destination: West Coast USA
The West Coast of the United States, renowned for its diverse landscapes, vibrant cities, and educational excellence, offers international students a wealth of opportunities and experiences. Delilah Kealy-Roberts finds out what makes this region a top choice for students.
We begin our West Coast journey in Pasadena, which boasts cultural landmarks and scenic beauty. Sean Rollolazo, Dean of Students at EF Academy Pasadena, highlights its unique attractions: “Pasadena hosts the famous Rose Parade every New Year’s Day and is home to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It’s also just an hour from beaches such as Santa Monica and Venice and two hours from skiing at Big Bear Mountain.”
Sean emphasizes the advantages for students at EF Academy Pasadena: “Students can connect their studies with real-world experiences through field trips, like understanding rollercoaster physics at Santa Monica Pier. The school organizes excursions to local attractions such as Disneyland and the Hollywood Sign. Students can also explore local universities, including UCLA and USC.”
For a quintessential California experience, Sean recommends a 20-minute drive to Burbank to tour Warner Brothers Studios, where students can explore sets and see props from popular movies.
San Diego is another prime destination in California, known for its wonderful weather and beautiful beaches. Francine Chemnick, Director of International Programs, Professional and Continuing Education at the University of San Diego, describes the city: “San Diego is well-known for its year-round outdoor events. It is one of the safest, cleanest, and most desirable places to live in the USA.”
She highlights the welcoming nature of the city: “We are grateful for our international students and visitors, as they bring diversity and culture to our city.” Francine recommends visiting The Embarcadero for various activities, including harbor walks, cruises, and museums. For outdoor adventures, she suggests hiking at Torrey Pines State Beach Park, which offers scenic trails and stunning sunsets.
Hollywood, a neighborhood in Los Angeles globally recognized as the epicenter of the entertainment industry, is also a must-see destination on the West Coast. Darren Grosch, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Los Angeles City College , highlights its significance: “Hollywood is known for its iconic landmarks, such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Hollywood Sign.”
He emphasizes Hollywood’s cultural vibrancy: “Its diverse population and innovative spirit make it an attractive destination for international students.”
A must-see place, he adds, is Griffith Observatory. “It offers stunning views of the city and the Hollywood Sign, along with fascinating exhibits and planetarium shows that explore the wonders of the universe. It’s a perfect spot for both sightseeing and learning,” he explains.
Washington, the Northern most state on the West Coast, also holds great appeal for international students seeking adventure. Located just north of Seattle, Lynnwood combines urban and natural attractions. Martha Acosta-Pieters, Director of International Marketing at Edmonds College , notes Washington’s unique combination of nature and industry: “It is home to international companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Boeing.”
Martha describes Lynnwood’s appeal, explaining, “The city of Lynnwood is 30 minutes north of Seattle and within a bus ride to the beach and ferry boats that transport you to the adjacent islands and rest of the Washington peninsula. Students can enjoy hikes, canoeing, kayaking, and sightseeing during the year. For those interested in arts and crafts, there is a large community of local artists featured in various galleries and stores in the port city of Edmonds, five minutes by bus from Lynnwood Washington where the college is located.”
For a unique experience, Martha suggests a hot air balloon ride for stunning views of the ocean, farmlands, and vineyards. Another option is themed escape rooms for those who enjoy indoor activities.
Oregon also offers its own charm and educational opportunities. Known for its diverse landscapes, Oregon is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. Cities like Portland and Eugene are cultural hubs, with vibrant arts scenes and renowned educational institutions.
Portland, often called the City of Roses, is famous for its eco-friendliness and extensive park system. Students can explore Powell’s City of Books, one of the largest independent bookstores, or visit the Portland Art Museum. Outdoor activities abound, with hiking and skiing opportunities at nearby Mount Hood.
The West Coast stands out as an appealing destination for international students, offering a blend of educational excellence, cultural richness, and natural beauty.
From California’s iconic landmarks to Washington’s vibrant city life and Oregon’s scenic wonders, the region promises a diverse and enriching experience. The West Coast’s unique attractions and welcoming environment make it ideal for those seeking academic and personal growth.
Endless Excursions
There is no shortage of activities for students to enjoy on the West Coast. In San Diego, Francine recommends students hike the scenic trails offered at Torrey Pines State Beach Park. “Especially the ones which lead you to the beach.”
“If you are not into hiking,” Francine adds, “take a drive to the beach and catch one of our spectacular sunsets!”
Martha says, “I always hear from students that what they love about Washington state is the variety of activities they can take part in, lots of outdoor activities and indoors, plenty of art and culture and lots of unique things like the ‘gum wall in Seattle’ and ‘pick your own farms’.
In Oregon, the city of Eugene offers a vibrant downtown, bike paths, and proximity to natural attractions, making it appealing for students seeking adventure.
